Simon Called Peter Robert Keable 9781117460529 Books

I downloaded this book free on my Kindle thinking it would be a work about the Apostle Peter. It turned out to be a very interesting novel about a young British pastor who became a chaplain during World War I. Rather than dealing with interactions between the chaplain and combat soldiers, the novel goes into the young chaplain's struggles with his faith and the temptations he faces while being stationed in France.

It was a bit difficult for me to follow at times due to the heavy use of early 20th centure British slang. This Kindle lookup feature was very helpful.

Simon Called Peter Robert Keable 9781117460529 Books Reviews

I thought I might give this book a whirl since Fitzgerald went through the trouble of alluding to it in The Great Gatsby. He was right though--it is bad. The style is stringy at best and it leaves nothing for the reader to grasp. The entire plot is told without any call for imagination or critical thinking. Two dimensional characters and worn out tropes.
Like the previous reviewer, upon stumbling across this book I assumed it was about the disciple Peter. Having read the review, I decided to go ahead and read it anyways. My only complaint is the ending; I wish it would have continued a bit further. I will be reading this book again, it was that good.
Peter is a naive, idealistic London clergyman who has been sheltered and isolated by his station in life, so when he joins the military as a chaplain in World War I and is stationed in France, he is shocked by what he finds is the real world, and suffers a crisis of faith as a result, helped along by his attraction to a flirtatious and worldly young nurse, named Julie. This book was banned for its connection to an adulterous couple who were murdered in New Jersey in 1922, and F. Scott Fitzgerald referred to this novel in The Great Gatsby as “terrible stuff,” so naturally I had to read it and see if it truly was as bad as everyone thought. I actually found it very enjoyable. There are some parts that are so thick with British slang that it was a bit muddy for a modern American to wade through at times, but the story and the characters were definitely interesting. Peter’s struggles with his faith can get a little academic and long-winded, but his interactions with the other officers and the young women he meets in France, and the impact of those interactions on him were very entertaining. I’m not sure I agree with the answers Peter seems to champion to his questions of faith, nor did I feel his arguments were particularly persuasive, but it did seem realistic for a person who had been so sheltered to overcompensate and swing wide in the opposite direction. I didn’t really care for Julie all that much, but as the novel focused on Peter and his thoughts, it didn’t matter that much that I didn’t warm to her. I’m not sure how I feel about the ending, as it had a ‘to be continued’ feel to it, so I suppose the story will pick up where it left off, with the sequel, Recompence. This is a no-frills, public domain edition available for free. There are no annotations or references, but it is a perfectly readable copy of the book and includes the author’s note to the reader that precedes the main text. Perfectly adequate for anyone wanting to give this book a read to see what all the fuss is about.
Sorry this review is late. I have been ill. I am a history buff and disable so do a lot of reading. It is wonderful to me that you have so many free Books. I could never afford to buy all the books read. My is one of the best used and loved items I have bought in years.
I chose this book because I like to about the lives of Biblical people; the book was well written. This book is one of many favorites in my collection.
Very good book
This book is highly enjoyable on its own, but particularly interesting just after rereading "The Great Gatsby", the way I found it. Fitzgerald referenced the novel in the following way Nick Carraway picks a copy up in Myrtle Wilson's living room waiting for his friend Tom Buchanan to have illicit sex in the bedroom with her. After reading a chapter Nick recounts "either it was terrible stuff or the whiskey distorted things, because it didn't make any sense to me" The moral framework in which Keable's protagonist Peter conducts his affair with Julie in "Simon Called Peter" is so different from the materialist framework of Fitzgerald's characters that it seems a different universe. Keable is not clever, the way Fitzgerald is. But he has passion, belief and a good story to tell, even if a little long winded.
