An ancient legend says that Jesus had a twin brother Thomas. An extra-Biblical text that dates from perhaps as early as the late first century CE (which would make it the same age as the Biblical Gospels) claims to be the secret teachings of Jesus as recorded by “Judas Didymos Thomas.” The Greek word “Didymos” and the Aramaic word “Thomas” both mean “twin.”
While only several Greek fragments of this manuscript, dating to the early second century CE, actually exist, a manuscript written in Coptic from the fourth century was discovered in 1945. This Gospel of Thomas contains 114 purported sayings of Jesus, many of which resemble passages in the New Testament.
Drawing upon years of extensive research in early Jewish and Christian history and recent work on the historical Jesus, acclaimed novelist Ron Cooper focuses on Thomas of Nazareth, old and bitter after years of self-imposed exile from his homeland, who returns to Jerusalem to write a book about his identical twin brother Jesus. Disgusted by how others have perverted his brother’s message, Thomas wants to set the record straight. But in doing so, he must try to unravel the enigma that was Jesus.
Provocative, inventive, and sure to be controversial, The Gospel of the Twin draws upon scriptural and ancient, non-Biblical sources to present an imaginative version of the founding of Christianity through scenes of violence, tenderness, and mistaken identity that will change the way the world thinks about Jesus.
For fans of such books as Zealot The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth by Reza Aslan, Killing Jesus by Bill O'Reilly, and even such Dan Brown novels as The Da Vinci Code, Cooper’s The Gospel of the Twin may also appeal to readers of such sophisticated Bible scholars as Bart Erhman, Marcus Borg, John Dominic Crossan, and Elaine Pagels, all of whom have written academic works as well as books more accessible to the general reader.
With The Gospel of the Twin, Cooper provides a potentially controversial, compellingly human, and thoroughly readable page-turner―his own brilliant version of what many call “the greatest story ever told.”

“Many adored Jesus, and even more despised him - such is the fate of all who inspire--but no one else felt about him the way I did, a way that even I am unable to fully express.”The Gospel of the Twin is Ron Cooper’s story of Jesus, told through the eyes of his now 80-year-old twin brother, Thomas. I very much enjoyed Cooper’s first two novels and was looking forward to his latest. I can’t speak to the historical or biblical accuracy of the book, other than I recognized many events taught to me from childhood, but I found the story entirely compelling.
Thomas attempts to set the record straight about Jesus with weary determination and a perspective only available to him. Jesus and Thomas have a complex relationship. Thomas loves his brother fiercely, struggles to understand him, and ultimately decides to follow him. He is troubled by guilt over his failure to keep his promise to his mother to keep his brother safe.
Thomas’ Jesus is both ordinary and exceptional. He helps his parents, has friends, and occasionally fights with his brother. He is charismatic, idealistic, patient, kind, and wise, even as a young boy. His sagacity at times both inspired and frustrated his brother, and was an integral part of his charisma. Thomas’ naturalistic interpretations of Jesus’ alleged miracles may anger some, but I remained immersed in the story. Much of the pleasure of the book comes from seeing the beginning of a tiny movement against Roman oppression and a philosophy of “a new way of life,” which later became a religion that has come to influence billions.
Ron Cooper is a masterful storyteller, and I much enjoyed his gospel from the first page through the last.

The Gospel of the Twin edition by Ron Cooper Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Loved the step by step heightening of the premise...Great writer.. new Faulkner!!
This memorable novel offers the story of Christ as a fully-fledged novel without any of the mysticism and miracles attributed to his experience, yet comes off as a very human, humane, thoughtful story that is filled with all the humanity that we read novels for in the first place. The teachings of Christ, the seeking of Christ, is delightful, and while the book is not right for everybody, it made me think about Christianity with a lot more empathy and patience than I am accustomed to.
Saw this book in the "just released" section at the library. As a bit of a religion hobbyist, gave it a shot and was pleasantly surprised. It's a fun read and more likely than not captures what really happened in that time (if there is in fact a real biblical jesus) than what is currently in the gospels and letters. Love how he weaves the parallels between the non-magical Christian message (the good stuff) and that contained in the older Eastern religions. Kudos to the author for the creative story that is also based on the best historical facts available.
In “The Gospel of the Twin,” Judas Didymos Thomas, now eighty years old, reflects on his own life and that of his twin Jesus. Though they were close, Thomas still finds his brother an enigma and ponders his true nature.Despite the deeply philosophical nature of the story, the novel is a thoroughly accessible, page-turning adventure. Numerous times, those close to Jesus are puzzled by the way he talks to crowds. Thomas suggests Jesus speaks in parables because “people need stories, not arguments.”
Because Thomas is a retrospective narrator, readers are sometimes treated to his philosophical musings and growth as he is exposed to many cultures. He spends years wandering in India, Byzantium, Ethiopia, and Greece, while he tries to make sense of what he’s witnessed. Often he is tormented by guilt, wondering what he could have done to prevent his brother’s death.
Cooper’s provocative interpretations are sure to anger some readers and intrigue others. It often had me thinking, "Yeah, it could have happened that way." This is a deeply thoughtful and thoroughly researched story, one worth a careful reading and time spent in reflection.
Ron Cooper's TWIN is absolute clarity married to imagination and underpinned with impressive research. Thought-provoking and entirely original. I couldn't put it down and found the voice of Thomas mesmerizing.
I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, but I was pleasantly surprised and highly recommend!
I might be the perfect reader for Ron Cooper's intriguing new novel. I am a former Southern Baptist...borderline fundamentalist. I am now an agnostic cafeteria Catholic. I grew up with the stories in the Bible etched in my head by my mother and my church. But skepticism now is the right frame of mind for Ron's version of faith. Jesus has a twin? Jesus might be a bit crazy (in a socially good way)? I am reminded of one of my favorite Emily Dickinson poems, with the brilliant opening line "Tell all the truth but tell it slant" An old story, a new slant...that's the essence of this book. Well worth the read.
